OSEA Founder Jenefer Palmer: “When I embarked on my trip in search of the purest, most powerful ingredients to firm, tone, and brighten the skin I had no idea where my search was going to take me. On the southern tip of Patagonia, I met a family, who introduced me to a unique source of 100% organic Gigartina seaweed, loaded with nutrient-rich sea minerals and hand-harvested from the most pristine waters on the planet. Today we use no less than 7 different organic seaweeds in our OSEA formulations”.
Why? Quite simply put: The healing benefits of the sea are endless.
The sea is full of vitamins and minerals that seaweed is able to absorb therefore seaweed is far richer in trace minerals than land plants. Seaweed is one of the richest sources of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, trace elements, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese and zinc. Seaweed is also rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids; such as linoleic acids and Vitamin K, which are the basis of lipoproteins that strengthen and maintain the quality of a healthy cell membrane. Seaweed helps slow the aging process and protects skin from harsh environmental factors. As an iodine source, seaweed also provides natural slimming and toning properties.
OSEA’s seaweed is sourced exclusively from the purest, most pristine waters in the world in Patagonia. All OSEA seaweed is certified organic and kosher!
The three key seaweeds being harvested are Gigartina, Undaria and Macrocystis. OSEA use these in powder, whole leaf and extract forms.
GIGARTINA SKOTTSBERGII (Red Marine Algae) is a red algae and has hydrophilic properties that make it an excellent moisturising agent and protects against external aggressors. The iodine and bromine in Gigartina are bound to polyphenols that function as antiseptic and disinfecting agents. Studies indicate Gigartina is helpful in healing Herpes simplex, psoriasis and eczema. Gigartina is one of the best algae for skin because it’s so easy to extract the carrageenan--a highly concentrated, sulfated polysaccharide. Polysaccharides are known to hydrate, regulate sebum production, induce desquamation and stimulate cell regeneration. Red Algae has also been linked to a mucopolysaccharide that helps lock in moisture and boost the production of collagen.
Gigartina is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids; such as linoleic acids and Vitamin K, which are the basis of lipoproteins and cell membrane building. The highly sulfated polysaccharides and carrageenans of Gigartina combine with the amino acids and proteins of the skin’s surface to form a protective film. This film supports the absorption of amino acids, mineral bioactivators and vitamins by the skin.
UNDARIA PINNATIFIDA (Wakame, edible seaweed) is a brown algae rich in sodium, iron, potassium, calcium and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12 that help maintain skin’s moisture balance. Additionally, Undaria is an even richer source of iodine than Gigartina. Undaria inhibits the activity of hyaluronidase and collagenase – enzymes responsible for breaking down the hyaluronic acid and collagen in our skin. It also contains particular molecules known as Fucocidan, which play a unique role in maintaining healthy skin cells and have an anti-viral quality. Undaria also contains an active ingredient called sulfated polyfucose, which protects cell wall integrity and increases stability against UV light and environmental pollution. This helps maintain skin’s moisture balance--keeping looking young and healthy!
MACROCYSTIS PYRIFERA (Giant Kelp) is the largest of all algae and has high levels of iodine, vitamins and minerals. Commonly known as giant bladder kelp, it is an antiseptic and anti-irritant that helps heal sebaceous cysts, scrapes, sun damaged skin, while improving skin texture. In a study published in Cosmetics and Toiletries in 2001, in which the extract was applied topically to the skin of human volunteers, the results showed a reduction in wrinkles. It has a gelatinous quality that adds a natural glow to your skin.
